Joffe, Adolf Abramovich
(1883-1927)
   Russian diplomat. Born in Simferopol, he joined the Mensheviks. He became a friend of Leon Trotsky and helped him edit the Viennese Pravda. He was arrested and imprisoned in 1912. He was released following the 1917 revolution and joined the Bolsheviks. He led the peace talks with Germany in Brest-Litovsk and later became Soviet ambassador in Berlin. In 1920 he led the Russian delegation to the peace talks with Poland. Allied with Trotsky, he was part of the opposition to Stalin. He served as ambassador in Vienna and Tokyo.
